What is FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC)?
FIRST Tech Challenge is a program for middle and high school students (grades 7 - 12 or equivalent) where teams of up to 15 students build, program, and drive robots to compete in local, regional, state, and even global games.
Each year has a new game composed of a set of possible tasks that each team can complete to gain points. Two teams are randomly paired up to form an alliance for each round in a competition to play against another alliance of two teams. Rankings are determined first by how many rounds a team has won (each alliance wins, ties, or loses each match), then ties are broken by seeing how many points each individual team collected.
The program develops skills not only in building and coding for the modern age, but also cooperation, good sportsmanship, responsibility, leadership, public speaking skills, organization, and more.
FIRST also leads three other programs, called FIRST Lego League Jr. (FLL Jr.), FIRST Lego League (FLL), and FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), essentially doing the same things such as programming and building to play in competitions, but using different materials and building to suit different goals. There are several perceived levels of difficulty, generally seen as correlating with the grade levels allowed to participate. Students generally progress from FLL Jr. to FLL to FTC or FRC, or from FTC to FRC.
